The Nervous system Flashcards
What is the human nervous system, its role and its features?
Definition: A specialised network of cells in the body that act as our primary communication system
Role: To collect, process and respond to information in the environment , to co-ordinate the working of different organs in the body
Features: Uses electric signals (fast moving)
What are the roles of each division?
CNS: centre of conscious awareness; made up of brain and spinal cord
PNS: transmits messages via millions of neurons to and from CNS
ANS: governs body’s vital functions (e.g. breathing and heart rate)
SNS: controls muscle movements through information from receptors
SNS: Fight or Flight
PSNS: Rest and Digest
What is the sequence of neurons?
- Sensory receptors
- Sensory neuron
- Relay neuron
- Motor neuron
- Effector
Describe the process of synaptic transmission?
- An electric impulse reaches the end of the pre synaptic neuron
- Neurotransmitters are released from vesicles in the pre
- Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic gap and will bind with receptors on the post synaptic neuron
- There is a chance that a electric signal will be sent once these become in contact
- The unbound neurotransmitters are taken back to the pre or are broken down as enzymes
