Localisation of the brain Flashcards
What is the localisation of the brain function?
The idea that different areas of the brain are responsible for different functions
What are the four lobes and their roles?
Frontal: Involved in decision making, planning and problem solving. It also controls voluntary actions
Parietal: Processes sensory information e.g. touch, temperature and pain
Occipital: Processes visual information to interpret and understand what we see
Temporal: Involved with auditory processing and hearing
What are the 3 areas in the brain?
Broca’s area: involved in speech production
Wernicke’s area: responsible for speech comprehension
Central sulcus: division between frontal and parietal lobe
What are the strengths and limits of Localisation of the brain?
Strengths:
- Case study support = Phineas Gage (personality change when frontal love was damaged)
- Research support = Peterson et al (scientific evidence from neuroimaging)
Limits:
- Alternative research = Lashley (no specific area was soley responsible for learning in rats)
