Wildlife Sampling Flashcards
Why do we sample wildlife?
- Monitoring, information, transport and research
Biased sampling
Sampling interfered by negative selectivity of devices or choosing a sampling device based on an organism you wish to avoid
List the types of passive methods
- Entanglement devices
2. Entrapment devices
Fish entanglement devices
- Passive sampling method
- Using gill nets with floats & leads to stretch it vertically; Anchors keep net positioned.
Bird entanglement devices
- Passive sampling method
- Mist nests suspended between poles/trees entangle birds
- Requires frequent checking
Types of mammal entanglement devices
- Leg-hold trap: snaps onto leg of mammals (padded)
- Snare trap: kills target animal (e.g. mouse trap)
- Snares: encircle neck or body of mammal
List the different types of entrapment devices
- Hoop, fyke net, modified fyke and trap net
- Funnel traps
- Box traps (live traps)
- Pit-fall traps
Fish entrapment device
Hoop nets; have a series of hearts and when the fish enter they cannot exit
Funnel traps
Mammal entrapment device; leads into a central holding area
Box traps
Mammal entrapment device; closes entryway when tripped
Active Capture of Fish
- Seines used to encircle fish
- Trawls are towed to capture fish
- Dredges towed to capture shellfish
Beach Seine
- Net used to encircle fish
Active Capture Method
Cannon or drop nets used to capture large numbers of animals (usually birds) to band them
Electrofishing
The use of electrical currents to immobilize fish
Examples of non-capture methods
- Counting tracks
- Auditory surveys: counting frog or bird calls
- Egg mass counts
