Wildlife Health: Zoonotic Diseases Flashcards
Define ‘zoonotic diseases’
A human disease that is caused by transmission of a pathogen from an animal to a human
What are the three components of wildlife health surveillance?
- Continuous monitoring
- Sample collection and analysis
- Communication of results
White-nose syndrome of bats
A fungus that causes ulcers on the wings of bats. Ulcers on the wings increase porosity and water loss necessary for hibernation.
- Zoonotic disease
Trichomonosis in birds
Zoonotic disease caused by a parasite and which effects the upper GI tract. The disease is transmitted at bird feeders and causes wet, encrusted feathers, emaciation and gasping/gagging.
- Can cause a secondary bacterial infection
Sarcoptic mange in foxes
Mite found on the base of tail, elbows, hocks, and face of foxes. In mild cases there is only slight crusting. Causes rash in humans.
