Wider Coastal Landscape Flashcards
Coastal classification
Coasts = dynamic landscapes influenced by L+ST factors
Include: geology + vegetation
Littoral zone
Littoral zone is a series of sub-zones to represent the features of the wider coastline from sea - land
Includes 4 key sub-zones: offshore, nearshore, foreshore, backshore
Zone reaches dynamic equilibrium where there’s a balance b/ inputs + outputs
Littoral zone in/outputs
Sediment is the key input AND output of the system + is determined by:
- inputs - action of waves currents + wind
- outputs - washed out into sea by erosion
High energy coasts
High energy coasts characterised by:
Destructive waves, long fetches, high rates of erosion, caves, arches, stacks, stumps, cliffs, wave-cut platforms
Low energy coasts
Low energy coasts characterised by:
Constructive waves, shorter fetches, higher rates of deposition, spits, bars, beaches, sand dunes, salt marshes
