Coastal Flooding Flashcards
Coastal flooding
Poses a risk 2 millions of people today because many continue to live near coastlines for recreation + employment purposes.
Low-lying coasts are @ risk of flooding from local factors + global rises in sea levels
E.g. = Maldives
In the Maldives the removal of mangroves is leasing 2 an increased risk of flooding w/ Inc wave height + less stable cliffs
Because there’s a lack of roots in the soil
Waste disposal + logging have caused the soil 2 lack roots
Disturbance + removal of the mangroves is leading 2 increased wave energy + height. Because the trees would normally act as a barrier helping 2 dissipate the waves energy before it reaches land
E.g. Bangladesh
Storm surges threaten the lives of those living near the coast
Rate of coastal erosion is expected 2 increase in the future if storm surge events continue 2 rise
Risk associated w/ storm surges in the Bay of Bengal is because Bangladesh is so low-lying
Impacts of CC
CC is changing the frequency + intensity of low-pressure depressions + tropical storms
Rising global temps are causing our oceans 2 warm triggering these low-pressure systems
Increases the risk of coastal flooding + creates unusual weather conditions
