why was war bad for the Liberal Party? Flashcards
Britain at war 1914-1918
there was a need for greater state intervention
workers, munitions, foods etc.
however this went against Liberal values
1914-16 ‘shell’ shortage and need for more munitions
this was eventually resolved by DLG as Minister of Munitions, but Liberals were slow to react due to issues of state intervention
end of ‘free trade’ ideas
tariffs were needed during war, and introduced on luxury items in 1915
Asquith was forced to reunite with Conservatives and Labour
for the war effort
created a ‘Coalition’ Government weakening power for the Liberals
In 1916 Asquith was replaced by DLG as PM
this split the Liberal party, as some still supported Asquith
Maurice Debate 1918
Asquith led opposition to DLG in the House of Commons (over troop figures in trenches)
highlights a split in the party
