Britain at war 1914-1918
Gave the government control during the war
necessary to control the economy, food, workers etc, so that everything was focused on the war effort.
Ministry of Munitions set up to organise war materials in 1915
Introduced buying of materials, use of science, factories, war production, women workers. To ensure enough production for war – weapons, technology etc.
Many industries nationalised under government control
e.g. mines, railways
To control and maximise production for war resources.
controls over everyday life
Introduction of British Summer Time, reduction of opening times in pubs etc, in order to maximise hours of work and ensure workers are productive.
Department of Food Production set up
To increase the amount of home grown food (due to U-boat campaign- sinking almost 5000 ships), rationing. To ensure Britain had enough food, show fairness & equality, morale.
Censorship & Propaganda
Controls over the press, letters censored, posters etc. Necessary for defence & national security. Propaganda – needed for morale, Army volunteers, women etc.
Economy
Government controlled prices, wages, rents etc – to stabilise the economy, show equality, help morale (especially working class).
Co-operation with Trade Unions
Needed for production, organisation of workers etc. They demanded the control of wages, jobs to be given back after the war etc. Therefore the war enhanced the status of Trade Unions.
