Why had the Labour Party grown in power by 1914? Flashcards
Political issues 1900-1914
Steady growth from the 19th century
With the socialist parties, middle class support from the Fabian Society, support for workers / strikes under the LRC and then ILP.
Taff Vale case 1901
more workers and unions realised they needed representation of working men in Parliament to bring about reform.
Support of (and from) the Liberal party
due to the Lib-Lab pact in the 1906 election influenced social reforms e.g. Trade Disputes Act.
Trade Unions supported Labour
they had grown in membership, and from 1908, the miners supported Labour.
1913 Trade Union Act
meant that Trade Unions could help to finance the Labour Party.
Payment of the MPs Act
meant that more working class people could enter politics, usually joining the Labour Party.
1910 Elections
due to the declining support for the Liberals in these elections results - meaning that Liberals relied more on Labour in government.
