Britain at war 1914-1918
before the war
many women were working in shops, offices, professions like medicine and teaching.
however the war accelerated these changes
women needed as the workforce (due to men fighting)
did traditionally male jobs e.g. factories, office, transport, non-combatant jobs in Armed forces. helped Britain to win the war (maintained industries at home)
7.3 million women in work by 1918
changed views of women
previously viewed as weak and only capable of housework
they were able to prove themselves
1919 Sex Disqualification Act
allowed for jobs in Civil Service, Local Government and jury
fashion changed
shorter skirts and hair
shows greater freedom
how many women were working in munitions by 1918?
in 1914, 82,000 women were working in munitions which rose to 947,000 by 1918
female doctors
in 1911, there were 411 female doctors, but by 1921, there were 1253 female doctors
female patrols
by 1917, 4000 patrols from the women’s police force & other volunteers kept an eye on the domestic lives of women, as the illegitimate births increased and there were reports of more sexual activity
