DON’T THINK THEIR PARTICIPATION WILL MATTER
POINT - One reason people don’t participate is they don’t think their participation will matter.
EXPLAIN - Individuals on their own might not feel that their voice is loud enough or feel a single protest or vote won’t make a difference.
EXAMPLE - For example, people have been protesting and voting against the nuclear weapons at Faslane in Scotland for decades but they are still here.
FEEL EXCLUDED FROM POLITICS
POINT - Another reason people don’t participate is because they feel excluded from politics.
EXPLAIN - Many younger people,women,ethnic minorities, disable people the LGBTQIA+ people feel they are underrepresented by people in power.
EXAMPLE - For example, there has only been 1 woman in charge in Scotland’s democracy and 3 women in charge in the UK’s democracy.
THEY DON’T KNOW HOW
POINT - An Additional reason people don’t participate is they don’t know how to.
EXPLAIN - Scotland has a complex voting system , they are not aware of their voting rights or are not informed enough.
EXAMPLE - For example, most people are not members of a political party and only half of them vote in Scottish elections.
