DISSOLUTION OF PARLIAMENT
POINT - The first stage of an election is the dissolution.
EXPLAIN - In the 6 week prior to the election MSP’s stop being MSP’s and focus on their campaign.
EXAMPLE - For example, Gillian Martin was re-elected for Aberedeen-Shire East in 2016 and 2021.
THE CAMPAIGN
POINT - The second stage of an election is the campaign.
EXPLAIN - This is when all candidates and parties will do what they can to promote themselves and gain support.
EXAMPLE - For example, in the 2021 Scottish election the MSP’s said they would have a second referendum if they get re-elected.
THE COUNT
POINT - The third stage of a Scottish election is the count.
EXPLAIN - On the day of the election votes are counted and the party with the most seats wins the election.
EXAMPLE - For example, millions of people over the age of 16 were able to vote in the 2021 Scottish parliament election where the SMP fell one seat short of majority.
