LEAD THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT
POINT - One role of the First Minister is to lead the Scottish government.
EXPLAIN - This means that the First Minister makes the final decision on what each of the departments of government do in devolved areas such as health and education.
EXAMPLE - For example, Nicola Sturgeon would have approved the decision to make bus travel free to under 21s.
REPRESENT SCOTLAND
POINT - Another role of the First Minister is to represent Scotland.
EXPLAIN - This means as the head of the Scottish government it is their responsibility to speak and act on behalf of Scotland in areas which are devolved.
EXAMPLE - For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic Nicola Sturgeon represented Scotland in the UK crisis meetings.
APPOINT CABINET SECRETARIES
POINT - An additional role of the First minister is to appoint cabinet secretaries.
EXPLAIN - As the First Minister they will select other MSPs from the Scottish parliament to take responsibility for the different departments of the Scottish government.
EXAMPLE - For example, Humza Yousaf was appointed cabinet secretary for health and social care in may 2021.
