People are marginalised/those outside mainstream social life tend to be attracted to sects eg Ethnic minorities/working-class as it gives them status and people to support them – Wallis and Weber.

A
People who experience deprivation – lack something even if they are not Poor (social/physical /organismic/ethical/cultural)

A
Join due to rapid social change when traditional norms are distracted and social relationships come to lack consistency and meaning/ E.g. fundamentalist groups. May lead to secularisation as they feel unfulfilled
