Reject everything about society - e.g. peoples temple/Davidians (similar to a cult) contradict people life/brainwashed/ Often live in a commune

World accommodating NRM

Don’t accept what society does but integrate and are tolerant (similar to a sect) e.g. Scientology/JW. Neo Pentecostalism/seek to restore religious purity to religion they believe has lost its value

World affirming NRM

Answer 3

Positive about the world but not positive about people believe people need to change to make the world better (similar to a denomination) e.g. catholic Christianity/Protestant Christianity. Often don’t have traditional belief in God/believe individuals lack spirituality and stop world being better place

Criticism for WAllis

– Lots of overlap between the groups and what Wallis says/not clear-cut enough
– stark and bainbridge- Wallis Typology all of them are Cults an offer and do different things
– Audience cult – require a little commitment from followers/often act as little more than a form of entertainment e.g. astrology
– Client cúlt =Offer services to followers who are seen as customers/of a way of enhancing life rather than alternative lifestyle e.g. Scientology
– Unclear how much involvement members need to have
