What is an electronegative atom?
when an atom attracts a bonding pair of electrons, more strongly.
Define electronegativity.
An atoms ability to attract a pair of electrons in a covalent bond.
Which are the factors that affect electronegativity?
- nuclear charge: The higher the nuclear charge, the higher the electronegativity of the atom.
- size of atom ( atomic radius): The smaller the atom, the shorter the atomic radius, thus the more electronegative the atom is.
Describe the trend in electronegativity in a group.
As we go down a group, the size of molecules increases, therefore, the nuclear radius also increases. This means that as we go down a group, electronegativity decreaseses.

Across a period, nuclear charge increases, therefore, electronegativity increases across a period.
What determines wether a molecule is polar, or non - polar?
Wether it has a more electronegative atom, or not.

What is a polar molecule?
A molecule which has a dipole and has a more electronegative atom, this leads to an uneven distribution of charges.
What is a non-polar molecule?
A molecule which has an even distribution of charges, because electronegativity is the same in both atoms.
What do atoms with a higher electronegativity have?
A dipole, and are polar,and have a negative charge ( Because elevtrons are more on their side)
What do atoms with lower electronegativity have?
have NO dipole, and are non-polar,and have a negative charge.
Which atom will always have the negative charge, and whihc atoms will always have the positive charge, when there is a more electronegative atom present.
The electronegative atom, will ALWAYS have the negative charge, and the dipole, and the least electronegative atom, will have the positive charge.
What determines how polar a molecule is?
The higher the difference in electronegativity, the higher the polarity
and vice - versa.
