Covalent, and dative covalent bonding Flashcards
What is covalent bonding?
When elements share a pair or more, of electrons.
Name all the types of covalent bonds.
SINGLE, DOUBLE, AND TRIPLE.
How many electrons in a single bond?
There is a pair of electrons, so 2 electrons per bond.
An atom forms enough covalent bonds, to have a full outer shell of electrons.
TRUE OR FALSE?
TRUE
State all the lengths of covalent bonds in order. From longest, to shortest.
1.single
2.double
3.triple.
Fill in the missing words:
As bond length decreases, bong strengths ………….
increases.
Fill in the missing word:
triple bonds are stronger than double bonds, and double bonds are stronger than single bonds, because …………… …………… matters.
bond length
What is a dative covalent bond?
It is a bond in which an atom that has a lone pair of electrons, donates that pair to another atom that needs it in order to reach a full outer shell.
What is the valence bond theory?
It states that covalent bonds are formed from overlapping orbitals.
If two atoms contain orbitals which have unpaired electrons, then the orbitals will overlap with each other, to form a covalent bond.
What is a sigma bond?
When two orbitals overlap end on.
what is a pi bond?
Orbitals that overlap side on.
Name which type of bond ( sigma or pi) single, double, and triple bonds form.
- Sigle bond : sigma bond.
- double bond : pi bond.
- triple bond : 2 pi bonds.
