Molecular geometry Flashcards
What is a bonding pair?
A pair formed between two atoms ( one electron from each atom)
What is a lone pair?
A lone pair is an unpaired pair of electrons.
What do we call a molecule which has 2 bonding pairs, and 0 lone pairs?
Name : Linear

name: octahedral
What do you call a molecule with 4 bonding pairs, and 2 lone pairs?
name: square planar
what is the main purpose of a bond?
To repel as further away as possible from all the other bonds.
put the following in order, from strongest repulsion to weakest repulsion: Lone pair - bond pair, Lone pair - lone pair, bond pair - bond pair.
- Lone pair - lone pair
- lone pair - bonding pair
- bonding pair - bonding pair.
