Q

Why did the Tsar regime collapse in 1917?

A

The tsar was weak, indecisive and his government did not run the country well
The regime lost the support and loyalty of its people

Workers were deeply resentful due to the poor working and living conditions that only got worse
than better despite industrialisation occurring (and increase in wealth). This class grew as population increased and as industrial growth pulled people from the countryside to cities. In doing so forced the church weakened.

Peasants wanted to own their own land and have better living conditions, but little was made to help them.

They were an unsupportive mass that added to the difficulty of ruling Russia for the tsar, and to his downfall when the time came

Middle Classes, while they did well from industrialisation felt that government incompetence damaged their prospects and wanted to have a say in running the country.

The tsar’s response was refusal.
The nobility, which was the foundation of autocracy, was also discontented, first with Stolypin for getting too much power, later by the tsarina and Rasputin.

The Tsarina and Rasputin further damaged the relationship between the upper classes and the tsar, as well as
having an impact in the incompetence of the regime.

The war caused extreme shortages, particularly bad in Petrograd that would lead to even the army deserting the
tsar. When this happened, the regime collapsed.
