How diverse was the Russian Empire?
Very diverse, only 40% spoke Russian as their first language

80% of population were peasants
Most lived in village communes (conditions were very poor)

Very primitive, land was not very productive, growing seasons were short and so crop yield was very low.

They were poorly educated

Hunger and disease was common.
What was the result of a growing peasant population?
Worse working conditions

How did the orthodox church help the Tsar?
A lot of rural peasants were religious and so the orthodox church helped them keep loyal to the tsar.
Did peasants support radical political groups? (such as the bolsheviks)
Only a minority supported radical political groups who called for good farming land to be taken from aristocrats + the church and given to peasants.

Yes.

No. Most peasants had slum housing, illness, alcoholism, aswell as appalling working conditions for low pay.
