Phase 1: collapse of the south!
A
June 25th1950 Kim matched KPA across 38th parallel because he claimed south attacked his base at the border which was a lie. Strengthened by Soviet backing.
SK surprised and weak- no army as relying on US garrisons.
KPA captured Seoul on June 28th
By September whole of SK captured except for the Pusan Pocket in the south east.

Phase 2: UN intervention
A
War becomes international. Truman sends 60 battleships of US 7th fleet-patrol waters around Korea.
300 aircraft, 300,000 men at disposal. Wanted to intimidate KPA so they withdrew.
He appealed to UN so USA wasn’t alone.- as NK had acted aggressively.
7th July 1950: UN passed Security Council Resolution 84
16UN member states (like UK, France) send troops to defend SK
