How Did The Korean War End? Flashcards
MacArthur was sacked
MacArthur wanted to use nukes agasint china. Truman thought this was too far. Syngman Rhee was unpopular and UNs and Truman’s supoort for him was wavering. MacArthur proposal was rejected.
On 24th March 1951 he publicly threatened China with nukes if they didn’t withdraw.
Truman sacked MacArthur.
UN now leaderless.
Peace talks
UN didn’t want to fight so entered peace talks like:
Kaesong July 1951- failed due to fights
Panmunjom October 1951-failed due to fights,
Panmunjom April 1953 succeeded and armistice was signed on 27th July. This was because Eisenhower was now in charge of negotiations as the new president and Stalin had died so China and NK lost confidence.
What were the reasons it ended in stalemate?
The south had support- UN intervention, Liberation of Sourh Korea
The north had suppory- Support of Stalin, Liberation of North Korea
The UN lost the will to fight- MacArthur sacked.
The main reason was the north havinf suppory because they neutralized UN intervention.
South having support proved insufficient to win but would have won without China
UN loosing the will brought an end to the war but it was already a stalemate.
