What is the duty of workers under WHS Act?
Workers are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
What is a hazard?
A situation or thing that has the potential to harm a person, the environment or damage property.
What are the different classifications of hazards?
- work environment (access, confined spaces)
- energy (electrical, gravity, noise)
- manual handling (body stressing, ergonomics)
- substances (chemical or hazardous substances)
- fauna (insects and spiders)
- botanical (dangerous plants)
- medical conditions (allergies)
- biological (microbial) substances (bacteria, viruses)

What is a risk?
Risk is a combination of the likelihood and consequences of a hazard having an effect on the safety of an individual.
Likelihood x consequence = risk

- administrative controls
What is the name and purpose of workers’ compensation legislation?
Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003
- provide benefits to workers who sustain injury in their employment (or compensation for dependants in the event of death)
