Presentation of whooping cough
Mild coryzal symptoms, low grade fever, cough that is more severe after 1 week, paroxysmal cough, loud inspiratory whoop, apnoea
Characteristic cough in whooping cough
Mild dry cough which is worse after a week, sudden attacks of coughing which makes a loud whooping sound as child is unable to take air in, child can faint, vomit or even develop pneumothorax from coughing fits
Cause of whooping cough
Bordetella pertussis
What is whooping cough
Upper respiratory tract infection
Diagnosis of whooping cough
Nasal swab with PCR testing and bacterial culture
Management of whooping cough
Supportive care, macrolide Abx, those in close contact given prophylaxis
How long does whooping cough last
Typically resolves in around 8 weeks
