En la pregunta, si las palabras who o what están en la posición del sujeto, no se usa el auxiliar. Who broke it? - John broke it. (En esta pregunta, who se refiere a John, que es el sujeto de la frase. No se usa did). - What happened? - An accident happened. (What se refiere al sujeto de la frase, en este caso, an accident).
- Who did you invite? I invited Katie. - Aquí who pregunta por el objeto (a quién), por lo que hay que usar el auxiliar did. El sujeto es you en la pregunta.
