Types of Waves ~ Dumpers

A

Dumpers are waves which are caused by large waves coming into shallow water. The top of a dumper wave slams down into the sand in front of the wave.

Types of Waves ~ Breakers:

A

Breakers are good waves for surfing and are quite safe. They peak in one place and gradually fall in a forwards direction.

Types of Waves ~ Swell/Surging Waves:

A

Swell/Surging Waves happen at steep, sloping beaches where the water becomes deep quickly. These waves don’t, break, but are very strong.

What are Rips?

A

Rips are fast flowing current that move out to sea. They are very dangerous are found either where there is:

  • Sandy or darker water, between two spots where waves are breaking.
  • Foam or rippling water moving out to see.

Rips are usually fed by side currents called sweeps which drag you along the beach into the rips.
