Terms and Definitions (Vocabulary) - Legume, R.D.I, Nutrient and Enzymes.

A

Legume: Vegetables of the pea or pod family. E.g. beans, peanuts, lentils

R.D.I: Recommend Daily Intake.

Nutrient: A chemical compound found in food. Used by the body to function and grow.

Enzymes: Proteins that trigger activity in the cells of the body (Chemical reactions).

Excrete: To get rid of waste from the body.

Kilojoule: Unit used to measure energy content in food.

Dietary Fibre: Substance found in food that assists in the elimination of body wastes.

Obesity: Overweight by 30% of the ideal body weight of your age and gender.

A

Minerals: Chemical needed in the diet in small amounts to help regulate body function.

Lipids: Fatty substance including cholesterol and triglycerides that are present in blood.

Metabolism: Chemical events that occur in our body’s cell.

Glucose: A simple sugar that is that main source of energy for the body.

Protein: E.g. Beans, lentils, mushrooms, eggs, nuts, legumes, meat, dairy.

Vitamins: E.g. Fruits and Vegetables ~ All colours

Minerals: E.g. Soy, dairy, meat, green leafy things

Water: E.g. Drinking water

Fibre: E.g. Plants
