When is a workplace label required?
When the hazardous material is decanted into storage containers or supplier labels are lost or defaced and/or product is being produced in the workplace

- product identification
- information for safe handling
- reference to the location of the MSDS
What does MSDS stand for?
Material Safety Data Sheet
What does a MSDS provide?
provides detailed hazardous, precautionary and emergency information. It supplements the information supplied on the labels
How many sections of information does an MSDS label have?

What does the product id and use sections of the MSDS tell us?
name and address of company, where it came from and a telephone number to call in case of an emergency
What does the hazardous ingredients section of the MSDS tell us?
lists all the hazardous ingrediants found in the product. It also lists the LD50 and LC50 (ratings to determine how hazardous a material is)
What does the physical date on the MSDS tell us?
describes the properties of the substance and will tell you what they look like at room temperature (ie. gas, liquid or solid), odour threshold and the ph levels
What does the fire & explosion data on the MSDS tell us?
gives a good indication of the potential fire hazards and in what situations the material will catch fire and what type of fire extinguisher should be used.
What does the reactivity data on the MSDS tell us?
it will tell you when the product is unstable and the names of materials with which the product reacts. (ie. important when storing chemicals, you don’t want to put a chemical that reacts with plastic into a plastic container)
