What is Heifer International and what does it do?
US non-governmental organisation
donate pregnant heifers to farmers
(the calves are then donated to neighbours to make project sustainable)

1200 to 600 families in Rwanda
What are the socio-economic impacts?
children in school from earnings employ people to tend to herds increased economic activity Nestle is interested in purchasing the milk local food Is cheaper than imported
What are the political impacts?
increased protein consumption = healthier population = reduced disease contraction = able to be educated = creates employment = reduced aid dependency = increased GDP
What are the environmental impacts?
taught how to appropriately manage cattle
landscape is suited for cattle herding so work with environment rather than against (e.g cotton)
how is it sustainable?
manure used for bio-gas cow rather than milk = long term donate calves to neighbours to involve more people milk is kept cold can increase herds pay for children to go to school provides education and healthcare low-level technology used health of population improved
what does the hub do?
aims to deliver services that are needed (chilling units, advisers, healthcare
