White blood cells Flashcards
Outline mast cells
Located in tissues only, release substances that affect vascular permeability, prominent in mucosal and epithelial tissue.
Outline basophils
They bind IgE, involved in allergic responses, nonphagocytic cells and they have a lobed nucleus and have a heavily granulated cytoplasm.
Outline Eosinophils
Bilobed nuclei and granulated cytoplasm thought to play a role against parasitic organisms
What are cytokines
Messenger molecules which are primarily secreted by WBC’s, also assist in regulating the development of immune effector cells
What are chemokines
They are a type of cytokine that induces directed chemotaxis in local responsive cells.
function mainly as attractants for leukocytes, MCP1
What are the two types of contact between endothelium and circulating cells
initial contact: p selectin and E-selectin on endothelium recognized by oligosaccharides on leukocytes
tighter adhesion: intercellular adhesion molecules on the endothelium molecules on the endothelium recognized integrins on leukocytes.
State 3 pattern recognition receptors
Macrophage mannose receptor
scavenger receptor- recognizes oxidized LDL
TLR- recognizes a range of ligands
