Red blood cells Flashcards
How many subunits does Hb have and how many O2 does each one carry
It has 4 subunits and each one carries 1 molecule of O2
What is the Bohr effect
As carbon dioxide levels increase, there is a decrease in Hb’s affinity for O2
How is C02 carried in the body
10% dissolved, 22% as carbamino and 68% HC03-
Where in the body does erythropoiesis occur
In the bone marrow (after birth)
Outline the development of stem cells
multipotent stem cells—> multipotent progenitor cells—> linear committed progenitor cells—> mature cells
What is erythropoietin (EPO)
A cytokine/ hormone that drives erythropoiesis made in the kidney.
What are reticulocytes
They are RBC precursors and last for 2 days in the blood before they become definitive RBC.
What is polycythemia
Too much RBC’s which increases blood viscosity and clogs BV.
Why is Vit B12 and folic acid important
Essential for forming DNA, RBCs, and Skin, etc.
What condition arises from B12 or Folic acid deficiency
megaloblastic anemia.
