A

Light industries, mainly textile industry and plastics industry, started to develop in the 1950s. Their developments were supported by an influx of labour supply and capital from the mainland of China due to the outbreak of civil war.

Most of the factories were small in scale. They were found around Victoria Harbour such as Hung Hom and Kennedy Town

A

Clothing, clocks and watches, and
electronics industries developed rapidly during this period. The manufacturing sector was the largest in terms of both employment and local GDP contribution.

out mainly in the multi-storey factory
buildings in the urban fringe such as San Po Kong.

Mid 1970s to mid 1990s

A

The government has built industrial estates and industrial zones in most new towns. They offer large factory space at cheap rent.

Many space-demanding industries such as food-processing and machinery manufacturing are
attracted to these industrial areas.
