What Is Manufacturing Industry Flashcards
What is manufacturing system
Manufacturing industry works like a system. Inputs of the system include raw materials, power, land and capital. These inputs are turned into products (outputs) through production processes in factories. Outputs of the system can be either semi-finished or finished products. Further processing is needed to turn semi-finished products into finished goods. For example, textile industry produces clothes that serve as an input for the clothing industry. The manufacturing system also produces useless outputs such as wastewater and air pollutants
Types of manufacturing industry
Light industry and heavy industry
Labour-intensive and capital-intensive
Light industry and heavy industry
Both raw materials and finished products of light industries are relatively light in weight. Their factories are small in size. Heavy industries involve heavy raw materials and products. They also need more space for production.
Labour-intensive and capital-intensive
Labour-intensive industries require more workers. Labour cost makes up the largest portion of the total cost. Capital-intensive industries invest a lot of money for buying machines. Capital makes up a large portion of the total cost.
Types of manufacturing industry for clothing industry
Light industry - both raw material (cotton) and products (clothes) are light in weight.
Labour-intensive - needs abundant labour for various production processes.
Types of manufacturing industry for shipbuilding
Heavy industry - both raw material (steel)and products (ships) are heavy.
Capital-intensive - needs money for
machinery.
