What was the act’s aim?
To decrease federal control of Indian affairs and increase Indian self governing and responsibility.
What did the act stop about Indian lands?
The sale of Indian lands to individual buyers.
What happened to unallocated lane lost between 1900 and 1930?
Restored to tribes. This was used to expand the existing reservations and create new ones.
What happened with Bureau of Indian Affairs?
Natives became more involved. Still remained under direction of federal officials.
What did the act do for women?
Gave them political rights. Gavethem opportunity to train for domestic life work.
What did Collier’s work stimulate an interest in?
Indians arts and crafts, encourages them to produce them as an economic venture.
What did he provide on reservations?
Built hospitals, schools and irrigation systems to improve conditions there.
Why was education, economic sufficiency and health support used?
A promising route of assimilation, as well as caring for Native well being.
What was an original proposal that was abandoned?
To provide a separate federal court to deal with NA issues.
What did the lack of federal funds mean?
Never enough to buy back huge amounts of former reservation lands.
What was Collier’s big mistake?
He hasn’t consulted or involved them in his plans, mistakenly assuming that they all wanted self determination.

- improvements in education and health
- tribes were led again by tribal councils; resurgence of tribal culture
- dramatic loss of land through allotments was curtailed.
