Why was it coincidental that more aggressive measures began in 1953?
This was the time when there was increasing interest shown by timber and mining companies in Indian lands.
What happened to Indians under the terms of termination?
- They were no longer wards of the state
- subject to same laws and rights as all Americans
- ended recognition of NA tribes and treaties.
What did the voluntary relocation programme do?
Was established to provide support for Indians but was used as a means of luring them away from reservations.
What happened by 1968?
Indians had the highest rates of illiteracy, disease and unemployment. Also lived in the poorest accommodation.
What did President Lyndon Johnson propose?
A National Council on Indian opportunity to administer an ambitious programme of education.
What did the National Council programme also provide?
Quality homes with proper sanitation.
Knowledge and understanding of their rights.
