19th century shipbuilding (small-scale) shellfish industry. Location of estuary was key in early stages. Fishing in estuary and North Atlantic cod and whaling. Mid 19th Century, wealthy tourists came to Lympstone, (shaping the built environment).
Old buildings/services have now been turned into accomodation.
Many 19th century homes and strict planning to preserve the built environment by parish councils. Railway in 1861- time space compression, helped fishermen. 20th Century railway is still important for commuting as Lympstone becomes a dormitory settlement
What are the past characteristics of Toxteth?
Saxon-established, became a major port from the 18th century. The stream meant it was an ideal location for farming. Early on natural characteristics had a great impact. It was west coast so became involved in the transatlantic slave trade in the 18th century. Port grew in 18th century. Georgian Quarter was built for wealthy people. Many middle class began to commute, but still considered a greenfield site/ rural-urban fringe.
Growth and industrialisation led to change- quick cheap terraced houses
