What is zoology? Flashcards
What is zoology?
zoology is the physical characteristics. It is the body shape, body parts, and function. It is the scientific study off animal life.
General properties of living systems
Each organism has its own chemical uniqueness. They all contain 4 macromolecules which are nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.
Nucleic Acids
Nucleic acids are DNA and RNA in animals. They have a double helix structure and nucleotides (sugar phosphates) looks like a ladder. It is composed of Guanine, Adenind, thyminem and cytosine. They determine the characteristics. RNA tells how to make certain proteins.
Protein- lysozome
Lysozome attacks bacteria. action of protein act as an antibody. protein act as enzymes. enzymes break down. Proteins are hormones that send messages to different parts of the body.
Carbohydrates-Glucose
Glucose is a sugar. It provides chemical energy.
Lipids
Lipids are fats that keep you warm by storing energy.

Reproduction
Organisms can reproduce themselves, Sexual, asexual. Molecular is when the Helix structure splits and a new one is formed. Cell mitosis is when a new cell is formed. populations are created from fragmentation.
Possession of genetic programing
All organisms have their own genetic code
Metabolism
Nutrients needed to obtain chemical energy and molecular components for building and maintaining organism.
Development
Each organism has its own life cycle.
Environmental interactions
Ecology and responding to environmental stimuli.
