Protazoans Euglena Flashcards
Euglenoids
found in still pools and ponds. give a greenish color to the water. live on lily ponds.
E. gracilis
are spindel shaped and greenish. color is caused by the presence of chloroplasts.
Chloroplasts
contain chlorophyll and scattered through the cytoplasm
locomotion
from the flagellum
Flagellum
emerges from the reservoir, a clear flask shaped space in the anterior end. they beats at the rate of about 12 beats per second
body covering
is covered with a protective but flexible pellicle that is secreted by the clear ectoplasm that surrounds the endoplasm.
Stigma
“eye spot” is a reddish pigment spot that shades a swollen basal area of the flagellum.
Why is light sensitivity important to Euglena
so they move up in the water when there is sun light, if they dont they will starve to death.
osmoregulation
large contractile vacuole empties into the reservoir.
feeding
euglena take in no solid food
holophytic
nutrition making use of photosynthesis. food comes from carbon dioxide and water with sunlight.
in older eugelena you may see what colors in cytoplasm?
red, brown or orange.
Reproduction
longitudinal fision is when organism is free or when it is in the encysted state. begins at the anterior end and proceeds prosteriorly.
