Regional and Directional refrences Flashcards
Anterior
pertaining to the front or head end.
Posterior
Pertaining to the tail or hind end
Dorsal
Referring to the back or uppermost side (spine)
Ventral
Referring to the belly side
lateral
pertaining to the side of the body situated by either side
medial
at or near the middle or midline of a body or organ.
cephalic
pertaining to the head.
cranial
pertaining to the skull
caudal
pertaining to the tail end
proximal
toward or near the point of attachment. the opposite of distal.
distal
away from the base point of attachment
longitudinal
pertaining to the long axis of the body lengthwise
peripheral
referring to parts away from the center external to.
superficial
on or near the surgace
oral
pertaining to the mouth or the region around the mouth
aboral
pertaining to a region away from or most distant from the mouth.
Sagittal section
longitudinal section through the median vertical plane that bisects the body into right an left halves.
parasagittal section
section to one side of the midline, separating right and left portions of unequal size
median plane
vertical longitudinal plane that extends from the dorsal to the ventral surface and passes from the anterior end to the posterior end through the middle of the body.
symmetry
correspondence in size, shape and relative position of parts that are on opposite sides of a dividing line or median plane.
spherical symmetry
condition in which any plane passing through the center point will divide the body into like halves.
radial symmetry
condition in which any plane passing through the longitudinal axis will divide the body into similar halves.
bilateral symmetry
condition in which only a sagital plane will divide the body into like halves.
biradial symmetry
essentially radial but only 2 planes through the longitudinal axis created truly similar halves.
