What is the periodontium and what are the 4 different tissues it consists of?

The periodontium is the structure that supports teeth. It consists of:
- Gingiva
- Alveolar Bone
- Root cementum
- Periodontal ligament

Define periodontitis
A
Inflammation of the supporting tissue of the teeth

Why is periodontology important? (7 reasons)
A
- Highly prevalent, and increasing prevalence
- Number 1 cause of tooth loss
- Impaired oral functions: difficulty eating, speaking, swallowing etc
- Impacts quality of life
- Links to systemic disease eg CV disease, diabetes
- Ageing population = public health concern
- Foundation of good preventative/restorative dentistry
