The periodontium is the structure that supports teeth. It consists of:

  1. Gingiva
  2. Alveolar Bone
  3. Root cementum
  4. Periodontal ligament

A

Why is periodontology important? (7 reasons)

A
  1. Highly prevalent, and increasing prevalence
  2. Number 1 cause of tooth loss
  3. Impaired oral functions: difficulty eating, speaking, swallowing etc
  4. Impacts quality of life
  5. Links to systemic disease eg CV disease, diabetes
  6. Ageing population = public health concern
  7. Foundation of good preventative/restorative dentistry
