What does healthy gingiva look like?
Pink, scalloping, tight to the tooth
What is gingivitis?
It is the inflammation of the gingiva in response to plaque. It is reversible and common
What characteristics indicate gingivitis?
Redness (Erythema)
Swelling (odema)
Bleeding on probing
Bleeding on brushing
What is periodontitis?
Irreversible destruction to the supporting tissues of the teeth. Lead to permanent damage
What are the signs that indicate periodontitis?
All the signs of gingivitis alongside:
Pocket formation
Gingival recession
Tooth mobility
Tooth drifting
Halitosis
What is a periodontal pocket?
It is where the tissues have become detached from the root where plaque and debris can collect and thus worsen/deepen the pocket
