What is Neuroscience
Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary science devoted to the understanding of the nervous system
What is Mental Illness?
Mental illness: the reduced ability for a person to function over time effectively over time.
Can range from mild to severe
What are the signs of Mental Illness?
-Significant Levels of Distress
-Changes in thinking, mood, and behaviour
-Emotionally disconnected from people
When does poor mental health start?
It begins during adolescence/young adulthood usually due to major development in the brain and growth due to puberty.
But can be experienced by everyone despite age, race, education, religious background, etc.
What causes Psychiatric Disease?
-Genetics
-Early life experiences (trauma and abuse)
-Stressful experiences (death, etc.)
-Environmental influences on fetus
What is the Biopsychosocial model?
attributes mental illness to complex interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors.
Why are mental health challenges associated with stigma
mental health challenges are often associated with a stigma due to historical views. Was historically viewed as abnormal views. Was treated by priests, exorcisms and shamans.
What is the Mental Model?
Views mental illness as coming from a psychological, biological, or genetic cause.

What is the DSM
It is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The DSM provides descriptions, symptoms, and other criteria to help diagnose mental disorders

It contains symptoms clusters and treats the symptoms and not the disorders.
