What is obsessive compulsive disorder?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions, and sometimes also preoccupations that differ from developmental normative preoccupations and rituals -> are excessive
What are obsessions?
Obsessions are defined by recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images the are experienced as intrusive and unwanted.
Attempts to ignore or suppress these, by performing a thought
What are compulsions?
Compulsions are defined by repetitive behaviours or mental acts that the individual feels driven to do and according to rules that must be applied rigidly
What is the OCD Diagnostic Criteria
-Presence of obsessions, compulsions, or both
-Must be time-consuming or cause significant stress
What is the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale?
The Y-BOCS assesses presence of OCD
What are the 4 discrete dimensions of OCD?
-Symmetry
-Taboo thoughts
-Contamination
-Hoarding
What is the prevalence of OCD?
-Affects approximately 2% of the population
-Age at onset ranges from early childhood (less than 10 years)

What are the treatments for OCD?
They are typically prescribed SSRI’s or cognitive behavioural therapy
