What is meant by the localisation of place? Flashcards
Why do people oppose globalisation?
. No guarantee that the profit from TNCs will benefit the local community. Profits are sent back to the MEDC where the TNCs is based. Money is leaked to the MEDC.
. TNCs may drive local companies out of business. TNCs have the advantage of operating on larger scale e.g. buying more cheaply in bulk.
. Clone towns result in placelessness and a lack of individuality. Lack of unique character in a place.
. Loss of language/culture
Define MEDC
More economically developed country
Name the two types of approach in regards to belonging to a place
Top Down Approach
Bottom Up Approach
Explain Top Down Approach
Done through individuals with power E.g. Globalisation, decision from government, FDI, MNCs , school headteacher
Explain Bottom Up Approach
E.g. Local issues(localism / NIMBYISM) from the local community to give belonging to a place
Example of a response to globalisation in Totnes, England
Totnes opposing opening of costa coffee hence fighting back against globalisation. Totnes instead promoted local place and promoted local goods and services.
Example of a response to globlisation in Bristol, England.
.Bristol Pound introduced in 2012 is a local currency meaning it can only be used in Bristol
. It can only be used by independent shops. E.g. KFC can’t use it
. It prevents economic leakage. E.g. If a TNC such as Pepsi sells goods in the England, the majority of the profits made will be leaked to America which does not benefit the local area
Define ‘Belonging to a place’
Being part of the community. Belonging is key for making a place sustainable and successful.
Define Regeneration schemes
