Q

Paintings vs Photographs

A

. Paintings may be less reliable than photographs as there is more room for individual selection and interpretation. Some paintings are created from imagination. In some painting, certain features can be exaggerated. Scenery or the background of a painting can be exaggerated to look neater and nicer.

This is harder to do for photographs unless photoshop is used. Therefore, paintings could be argued to be more subjective than photographs. This means you could argue that photos are the best are representing place and showing changing character of the place (temporal change)

. However, paintings can show a deeper understanding and meaning as the painter can depict more character of what is in a place.

.Additionally for painting, the painter can combine different events or incidents from different times and put them together in one painting. This can show a clear sense of place and character of the place instead of one individual photograph.

.An example of this would be the painting of ‘ Gin Lane’ where the painter clearly shows his own insider perspective of Gin Lane. This can give the viewers of the painting more information and a stronger and clearer sense of place
