What is GIS? Flashcards
What does it mean to be doing GIS?
Triple S!
- ) Systems: Use the tool to solve geographic problems and build new tools and techniques.
- ) Science: Development o new tools and algarithms and studying theories and concepts
- ) Studies: Social Impact
Spatial arrangements
Distributions, networks, areas
Spatial relationships
Distance, direction and correlation
Spatial Processes
Flows, Forces and movement
Processes that alter spatial arrangements
Energy
Space VS Place
Place: Feeling towards something. Snow on Nov 6 VS snow on May 6.
Space: Physical things that can be measured.
Geographic information Technology:
Hardware and software, combined with the science of spatial information that supports geo-spatial applications.
Informational System (informal)
Provides the baseline for sharing and combining information (informal because it is not a set of rules, but more like guidelines) . Not neccesarily digitial
Formal Information Systems:
Integration of information in a digital system. Provides formal rules for entry, storage, editing, relating, querying and presenting information. A drawback of this is that it is difficult to incorporate qualitative, fuzzy affective info.
Do we us formal or informal information systems when dealing with GIS?
Formal structure!
Geographic Information:
Information about places on earths surface. Can be spatial or non-spatial information.
Spatial Information:
Location of an entitity
Non spatial information
Non location information about what is at a given location
Geocoding:
The process of calculating a location in Latitude and Longitude (or other global absolute frame of reference) based on a spatial reference such as street address.
What is population Pyramids a product of?
GIS.
