What is culture?
`A way of life for a particular society or part of society
What does culture consist of?
Beliefs, behaviours, objects, and other characteristics common to members of a particular group
How is culture developed and transmitted?
Socially
How do we learn culture?
Through socialisation
What is cultural diversity?
The differences between cultures, there exists a wide range of cultural values in one society
What is multiculturalism?
Cultures, races, religions, and ethnicities deserve to have their differences acknowledge and celebrated within a dominant political culture
What did David Cameron say about multiculturalism after the 7/7 bombings?
“Multiculturalism has failed”
What is homogenisation of culture?
Cultures have become similar or more alike, usually used negatively, say dominant culture culture invades and replaces local culture
What is an example of homogenisation of culture?
Americanisation
What is a subculture?
A smaller/ break off group of people that shares its own norms, customs, and values, e.g. goths, chavs etc.
What is mass culture?
- There is a set of norms and values that the majority of the population shares
- Neo Marxists suggest it replaced local culture
- e.g. football, cinema, etc.
What is folk culture?
- The culture of ordinary people
- Traditional practices associated with experiences, customs, traditions and beliefs of particular communities
- e.g. morris dancing and bagpipe music
What is high culture?
- Some cultural practices are superior to others
- The ruling class enjoy the arts
- High quality, lasting value, requires critical thinking
- e.g. opera, ballet, museums etc.
What is low culture?
- Derogatory term
- Low quality, enjoyed by masses
- e.g. soap operas, reality tv, cinema, football etc.
What is popular culture?
- Less derogatory term for low culture
- Music, art, literature, fashion, dance, film, social media, television, and podcasts consumed by the majority
- People actively participate in it, but mass culture is passive consumption
