Q
what are features of mental states?
A
- all or at least some mental states have phenomenal properties (qualia)
- all or at least some mental states have intentional properties
- there are two key characteristics of mental states; intentionality and qualia
- Intentionality: a mental state is about something. You can’t simply believe, you must believe SOMETHING. e.g. if I believe it is raining my belief is about the rain.
The quality that makes a mental state about something is called intentionality. - Qualia: intrinsic and non-intentional phenomenal properties that are introspectively accessible
Some mental states have a certain ‘feel’. For the person experiencing it, there is a certain way it feels to taste a pineapple or see the colour red.
