Princeps:
“First citizen” another name for Augustus.
Gladiator:
A man trained to fight with weapons against other men or wild animals in an arena
Caesar:
Is the title of the imperial character in the Roman empire.
Fasces:
A small bundle of rods which enclosed an axe; symbolized power.
Assembly:
The common people could express their viewpoint to the Assembly; Senate could veto the laws Assemblies pass; Plebeians were not in the Assembly.
City-state:
A city-state can be also called a Polis. A city that functions independently from other surrounding cities.
Democracy:
Ruled by the people.
Phalanx:
Greek military formation. This formation packed hundreds of men into a tight wedge with their long spears facing forward.
Republic:
A Republic was a form of government which there were 2 Consuls, 300 Senators and the assemblies.
Plebeian:
The common people who served as traders, craftsmen, etc (lower class)
Mythology:
Stories dealing with gods and heroes of a particular people.
Forum:
The center of the city in Rome where the laws were set
Senate:
Made up of 300 members; rule for life; control finances and foreign affairs, and pass laws
Barbarian:
A member of a community or tribe not belonging to one of the great civilizations.
Oligarchy:
“The rule of a few” the most powerful/wealthy ruled.
Publican:
Roman tax collectors (often dishonest and cheaters)
Philosophy:
Is the study of truth and wisdom.
Patrician:
The wealthy who owned land (upper class)
Aqueduct:
“Bridges” for water designed to let water fall at the perfect slope into the city
Tribune:
10 Plebeians that could veto Senate laws.
Sarissa:
Long spear, could be up to 6 meters long (18 ft) when you put it forward had long space between enemy and you. Vision was blocked.
Martyr:
Person who is killed because of their religion or other beliefs.
Hedonism:
Is the worshipping of pleasure (like Epicureanism)
Consul:
Two consuls in the Roman republic; take the place of king; they hold the Imperium; held power for a year; they elected the Senate.
Ottomans:
Used to be nomadic muslims in Anatolia. The consider themselves ghazis. Leader named Orhan declares himself sultan. They begin to invade. They are responsible for the Janissaries. Mehmed II takes Constantinople because they have gunpowder. Rename Constantinople Istanbul.Brought to its peak by Sulleyman. After that, it begins to decline. It lasts until the 1900’s (WW1)
