Princeps:
“First citizen” another name for Augustus.
Gladiator:
A man trained to fight with weapons against other men or wild animals in an arena
Caesar:
Is the title of the imperial character in the Roman empire.
Fasces:
A small bundle of rods which enclosed an axe; symbolized power.
Assembly:
The common people could express their viewpoint to the Assembly; Senate could veto the laws Assemblies pass; Plebeians were not in the Assembly.
City-state:
A city-state can be also called a Polis. A city that functions independently from other surrounding cities.
Democracy:
Ruled by the people.
Phalanx:
Greek military formation. This formation packed hundreds of men into a tight wedge with their long spears facing forward.
Republic:
A Republic was a form of government which there were 2 Consuls, 300 Senators and the assemblies.
Plebeian:
The common people who served as traders, craftsmen, etc (lower class)
Mythology:
Stories dealing with gods and heroes of a particular people.
Forum:
The center of the city in Rome where the laws were set
Senate:
Made up of 300 members; rule for life; control finances and foreign affairs, and pass laws
Barbarian:
A member of a community or tribe not belonging to one of the great civilizations.
Oligarchy:
“The rule of a few” the most powerful/wealthy ruled.
