When and why was the royal commision on the status of women created

A

The royal commision on the status of women was created in 1967 by Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, in response to womens rights groups advocating against there being no publically funded childcare programs, difficulty accessing abortions and birthcontrol, the division of labor, violance against women, lack of women present in political roles and the lack of equal pay for equal work.

What happened as a result of the creation of the royal commision on the status of women

A

Demonstrated that for the first time the government was recognizing that women faced and had a right to not face inequality. Prompted more womens rights groups both governmental and independent to be created. Resulted in the creation of a list of 167 reccomendations for the government in the name of fostering womens equality, this in turn resulted in the Womens and Gender equality government department being created

How did the recreation of the charter in 1981 affect womens rights

A

Women were also included under section 28 as having the right to equality. However out of concern regarding excess Federal government control provinces got a notwithstanding clause added under section 33 of the charter, which prevented laws that violated the charter from being invalidated. However this ended up only applying to section 7-15

How did the recreation of the charter in 1981 affect indigenous people?

A

Indigenous people were not consulted for the recreation of the charter and as a result issues of indigenous rights to sovereignty were not addressed. George Manual set up a protest called the constitution express that went from the east coast to west minister to ottawa and finally to the UN due to this.

What is bill C-31

A

Bill C-31 passed in 1985 as a result of Sandra Lovelace legally challenging the indian act reinstated indian status for living indigenous women who had had their status removed as a result of them marrying non indigenous men.

What is liberal feminism

A

Liberal feminism is the belief that when women area able to gain positions in institutions that have historically been dominated by men equality has been achieved. Liberal feminism gained traction as a result of Betty Friedmans 1963 book the feminine mistique which described the dissatisfaction that house wives experienced. Liberal feminism is criticized for failing to awknowledge and advocate against the other forms of oppression that women who belong to an oppressed group in addition to being a women experience that prevents them from reaching these positions. Liberal feminism also does not examine issues within the system of employment such as disparities among positions - only focuses on getting women in likely prestigious ones.
